I believe in will
It happened two years ago, but I still remember this adventure with a smile. I think that this is a good example of how with will and stubbornness one can do almost anything.
I was travelling in Iceland with a group of friends. We were walking in the mountains for a few days as well. One of these days we spent a night in a small rescue house on the seaside of the Atlantic Ocean. Rescue houses are all over Iceland. We had a meal and rested. Because I didn’t want to sleep I went for a little walk outside Close to the rescue house was a little river hat drains directly to the Atlantic Ocean. When I went near it there was an insufferable stench. I looked around and I couldn’t believe what I saw – there was huge dead whale lying there… This image was unbelievable. The river just about a half meter deep and the whale was about one and half meters tall... I only had one idea how a whale can go one hundred meters from the ocean to a small river. It could have swum there during a flood and was unable to swim back after the flood ended. The Whale was dead for about a month – some bones were outside, but another part of the body was carrion still. I examined the body and thought that a whale bone would be one of the most memorable things I could bring from Iceland. This idea was one of the craziest in my life, but... One of the smallest bones of a whale is a vertebra. It’s usually longer than half a meter. It weighs about 10 kilograms... and all vertebras were in the body of a dead whale. So, after a few minutes I told myself – I could take and bring home this bone to Lithuania. I was determined to do so.So I went back to the rescue house, took a knife and removed the vertebra from the whale and cleaned the dead meat. The smell was awful, but I knew I could do this. And I did. When my friends saw this bone that had an unbearable stench and after me telling them what I wanted to do with it, they categorically said that they didn't want go with me through the mountains. So I took all my equipment and some friends’ stuff, fixed the bone to my backpack and went alone few hundred metres behind the/ahead of main group. It was very hard, but I believed that I could do this. I walked about 20 kilometres through the mountains with a terrible smell close to my head. My friends laughing laughed at me and mocking mocked my idea. After a hard hiking trip I took the bone with its smell into a car. I must had to pack it extremely well so it wouldn’t smell so much. So after a few days in the car I must bring it to the airport and fly to Lithuania. When I was standing in a row at the airport the bone package broke and the smell went through the whole hall... But it is not the end. Until today I didn't known whether what I had done was legal. I don’t think so because tourists from Iceland are not allowed to take lava or other stones. It’s illegal... The whale’s bone from the mountains near the Atlantic Ocean is now in my room near other authentic things from my travels. This adventure is one of the most interesting and favourite in my traveling experience. After it, I think that the concept “impossible” is almost all in people’s heads. The power of will. This I believe. |
